Dancers talk experience at WBC OPEN

The World Ballet Competition OPEN is set to hold its 3rd event in Sibiu, Romania this March 20-23, 2014. Curious to know more details on the competition experience? Well, we interviewed two past competitors to offer some insight, tips on places to visit in Sibiu, and what to expect during the competition. Read their interviews and background information below!

INTERVIEW WITH LEANNE FROMM (USA)

Leanne has competed in several World Ballet Competition events, both the WBC USA and the WBC OPEN. Last March, she was awarded the Pre-Professional Gold Medal and named Excellence Award Winner at the WBC OPEN Romania 2013. Her high-scoring solo, Variation from Harlequinade (watch the video here), was also chosen to be featured in the concluding Gala of the Stars. Leanne has also competed at the World Ballet Competition USA, winning the Bronze medal in the Pre-Professional Category in 2012 and in the Preparatory Category in 2011.

What did you like about competing at the WBC OPEN Romania?

I always like competing at WBC and going to Romania for the Open was an even better experience for me. I liked the venue and the fact that it was so close to the hotel we stayed at, we could just walk over a few minutes before I had to be on stage. What I liked most was that everyone was so friendly. Even though I did not even speak Romanian, I made a lot of friends there. I also liked being in Sibiu, it's a beautiful town citadel.

What surprised you during your experience?

I can't think of anything that really surprised me. I have competed at WBC before so that wasn't really new to me, and I have been in Sibiu so I can't think of anything that was surprising.

What did you think of the instantaneous scoring system?

I really like the instantaneous scoring system. It is such a good feeling to know that my score would be up as soon as I finished my solo. It really makes the experience better for me, waiting backstage with the other dancers to hear the score when I get off.

Had you ever been to Sibiu?

I had been in Sibiu before, when I was little, and visited the town with my parents and grandparents. I didn't remember too much of it, just that I visited an old church and walked up into the tower.

Did you do any sight-seeing while in Sibiu? What did you enjoy about the city?

After the competition I walked all over the Old Town. I walked through the Bridge of Lies and walked through the Little Square, also saw the City Council building. I liked the feel of the Old Town, medieval, but cozy and very friendly. I liked the little cafes and restaurants in the Little Square.

If you live in Sibiu or had been there before, what place should a tourist visit?

Everyone should definitely walk through the Old Town.

If the WBC OPEN were to add another location, where would you want it to be?

I don't know. Somewhere exotic. Like South America!

Do you have any recommendations for the WBC OPEN?

I can't really think of anything because I like it the way it is.

INTERVIEW WITH CECILIA SARACCO (ITALY)

Cecilia recently competed at the WBC OPEN Romania 2013 where it was her first time participating in a WBC event. Her contemporary piece "Till the Last Drop", choreographed by Paolo Mereu, received the OPEN Choreography Award. Cecilia was also chosen to perform the contemporary piece in the Gala of the Stars.

Had you ever been to Sibiu?

I have never been to Sibiu before the competition.

What did you like about competing at the WBC OPEN Romania?

Like in all international competitions, I think what I enjoyed the most was learning different dancing preparations from different countries.

What surprised you during your experience?

I was surprised by the warm welcome.

What did you think of the instantaneous scoring system?

I think that the instantaneous scoring system was very useful and efficient.

Did you do any sight-seeing while in SibiuWhat did you enjoy about the city?

During my stay, I was able to visit the city and I loved walking around and I also liked the architecture.

If you live in Sibiu or had been there before, what place should a tourist visit?

I have only been there once, so I'd suggest visiting the main square which I really liked.

If the WBC OPEN were to add another location, where would you want it to be?

I would want it to be in Italy of course.

Do you have any recommendations for the WBC OPEN?

The competition was well organized and I was satisfied with The Open.
